For Copeland Motorsports driver Bryan Ortiz and Michael Carter, it all comes down to the final event weekend of the Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich this weekend at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Controlling their own destiny, Ortiz currently heads the championship points battle while teammate Carter tops Rookie of the Year honors entering the finale in California this weekend.
“It has been a year of consistent finishes and impressive results for these two drivers and for that, they have the opportunity to be rewarded,” explained Dean Copeland. “If we can continue to do what we have done in almost every event leading up to this coming weekend, we should be in great shape.”
Ortiz leads the overall series point standings by eleven markers while Carter sits fifth overall but has a healthy margin in the Rookie of the Year points battle.
Copeland continued, “It is really anyone’s championship to win or lose, and our drivers just need to stay cool and keep their heads in the game all weekend long. Michael has a solid opportunity to not only claim Rookie honors, but also finish in the top-three in the overall championship which would be a huge accomplishment for both him and our program.
Set to contend central California’s 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course made famous for the vast elevation changes and challenging ‘Corkscrew’, Copeland Motorsports enters aiming for the top step of the podium.
“It is going to be interesting. Bryan enters Laguna with track knowledge and experience,” added Copeland. “We were at Laguna in 2017 and Bryan was very fast before ending upside down in the last corner on the last lap. Going for the $75,000 prize back then, we are striving for a better result this year.”
