Competing with Copeland Motorsports since his move to cars in 2018, Tyler Gonzalez is set to retain his driving duties with the team in 2022. As a fixture in the Copeland Motorsports family since his move from karts to cars, Gonzalez will pull double duty in 2022 as he will race in the Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich with Copeland Motorsports.
“I am looking forward to returning back to the MX-5 Cup paddock and making a run at the series championship,” explained Gonzalez. “Copeland Motorsports is one of the best teams in the paddock and has helped me a ton get to where I am today. From when I left karting until now, we have been a team and I look forward to putting the Copeland Motorsports brand back on the top step of the podium in 2022.”
“Tyler is a very talented driver with a good head on his shoulders,” explained Dean Copeland. “When he entered the MX-5 Cup program back in 2018, he was young and very new to car racing. Sometimes he pushed too hard at times, but he has matured so much in the past few seasons that I think he can go out there and make a bid for the overall championship. Tyler will be a great coach for a new drivers and great ambassador of our program down into the karting ranks.”
Gonzalez will join Copeland Motorsports and already confirmed drivers of Max Opalski, who will make the move from karts to cars, as well veteran racer Jameson Riley.
Copeland added, “We won the series title in 2019 with Bryan Ortiz and our goal is to get back and do it again. We are looking to run six drivers this season and have a pair of our Copeland Motorsports house cars available. Whether we are racing for the Rookie of the Year honors, the season championship, race wins or podium results, our goals are set high for 2022.”
With three more funded driver positions available, Copeland Motorsports is looking to complete their driver lineup prior to the first event at the Daytona International Speedway in January.
