Meet the Coaches

Great drivers need a great team behind them.

Our crew brings together experienced mechanics, coaches, engineers, spotters, and racing professionals who understand what it takes to compete at a high level. They prepare the equipment, study performance, solve problems, and give our drivers the support they need to improve every time they get behind the wheel.

At Copeland Motorsports, our crew members are more than technicians. They are teachers, mentors, problem-solvers, and competitors. Every person plays a role in helping our drivers become smarter, more confident, and more capable racers.

John Dean

John has been racing since 1996 and coaching drivers since 1998. His racing career includes two MX-5 Cup Championships, two SCCA Championships, and recognition as the winningest driver in MX-5 Cup history. He also spent two seasons racing 1000cc motorcycles.

As a coach, John has worked with drivers through programs including Skip Barber Racing School and the Lucas Oil School of Racing. His approach focuses on developing smooth, precise inputs, especially under braking, while helping young drivers build the mindset needed to progress.

His advice is simple: be humble, be grateful, listen, and always be willing to learn.

Gresham Wagner

Gresham Wagner brings championship-winning experience to both racing and driver coaching. Over nine years of competition, he has earned four major championships, including the 2021 and 2024 Mazda MX-5 Cup titles, the 2022 TC America TCA Championship, and the 2024 Toyota GR Cup Championship with Copeland Motorsports. In that 2024 GR Cup season, he won 10 of 14 races.

Gresham has spent the past five years coaching drivers, using his experience across MX-5 Cup, GR Cup and GT4 competition to help young racers develop both speed and consistency. His approach emphasizes having a clear objective every time a driver gets in the car and staying focused on that goal regardless of what happens on track.

His advice to young drivers: Have a goal for every session, and don’t let on-track emotions distract you from it.

Capabilities & Expertise

Preparation starts long before we arrive at the track. Our team handles race vehicle  preparation, chassis setup and development, event planning, logistics, and race strategy to make sure drivers and equipment are ready to perform.

Our team provides complete trackside support throughout the race weekend. From mechanical adjustments and setup changes to strategy, feedback, and problem-solving, the crew works alongside each driver from the first session to the final lap.

Our coaches, engineers, and crew work together to help drivers understand where they can improve and how to apply those lessons on track. Through data analysis, video review, direct feedback, and one-on-one coaching, drivers develop stronger technique, better racecraft, and greater confidence behind the wheel.

Data is an important part of both vehicle development and driver development. Our team analyzes performance, evaluates setup changes, and compares on-track feedback to help identify opportunities for improvement. That information allows us to make informed decisions and give each driver clear, actionable direction.

Our team includes experienced mechanics, engineers, coaches, spotters, and racing professionals who understand every part of a successful race program. Their combined experience allows us to prepare reliable equipment, respond quickly under pressure, and provide drivers with the professional support needed to compete and grow.
