Just like any young kart racer is trying to do, Tyler Gonzalez is beginning his quest to climb the motorsports ladder. Announcing last week that he has joined Copeland Motorsports for the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Global Cup Presented by BF Goodrich Tires, the young Floridian will make his series debut this coming weekend at the Sebring International Raceway as he throws his hat in the mix for the $50,000.00 Mazda Scholarship.
“Last weekend I raced in a kart in Las Vegas and this weekend it is in a car in Florida,” explained Tyler Gonzalez. “I head back to Las Vegas next week for another karting event but I am really excited to get behind the wheel of the Mazda MX-5. Copeland Motorsports is one of the best teams in the paddock and will give me a chance at not only race wins and podiums, but the Rookie of the Year Award as well.”
Testing the Mazda MX-5 on a few occasions, Gonzalez has shown the speed needed to compete at the front of the field. Looking to take his winning experiences and race craft from karting to the next level, Gonzalez will hope to turn some heads this weekend.
Gonzalez continued, “It is a busy time of the year with a lot of racing, but I would not want it any other way.”
Set to take to the track this coming Friday for one practice session, Saturday will see three on track sessions that includes the second practice of the weekend, qualifying and the first wheel-to-wheel action. Sunday will be the home of race two as the Mazda MX-5 Global Cup Presented by BF Goodrich Tires competes alongside the Michelin IMSA SportsCar Encore.
Closing out 2018, Gonzalez will compete this weekend in Sebring before returning to the West Coast for the annual Superkarts! USA (SKUSA) SuperNationals next weekend. Stay tuned for more news, information and a complete 2019 schedule for Tyler Gonzalez as soon as it is made official.
